AUSSTELLUNG IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER

Sechs Jahre verbrachten Kasia Zimnoch und Paweł Kleszczewski, Gründer*innen des polnischen KONIK STUDIOS, in der Grafschaft Cavan an der irisch-nordirischen Grenze. Sie beobachteten, hörten zu, interpretierten. So entstand das Projekt IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER – ein Mix aus Animationen, einer Videoinstallation, digitalen Grafiken, Aufzeichnungen, 2D- und 3D-Werken und Objekten. IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER ist eine Geschichte über Orte, Menschen und ihre Schicksale. Aber auch über das Glauben, die Natur und die Verbundenheit.

Im Zentrum des Projektes steht der gleichnamige Animationsfilm IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER – eine Interpretation der irischen Legenden über den Beginn des Flusses Shannon (die Quelle des Shannon, der "Shannon Pot", liegt in Cavan) und den Mythos vom Lachs des Wissens (bradán feasa auf Irisch). Gemeinsam mit Mariusz Kleszczewski (Komposition, Schnitt und Animation der Figuren), Yann Ciennik und Krzysztof Jaworski (Musik) erschufen Kasia Zimnoch und Paweł Kleszczewski ein mehrfach international ausgezeichnete Werk – naturgebunden, düster und hoffnungsvoll zugleich.

Erstaunliche Orte wie Crannogs (natürliche und künstliche Inseln in Seen), Megalithen und heilige Brunnen sowie tiefere Einblicke in das Leben und Geschichten der Menschen, die auf der grünen Insel leben, bekommen wir im Dokumentarfilm OILEÁN (irisch für "Insel"), der ebenso Teil des Projektes ist.

Das Projekt wurde 2017 im Rahmen des "Bullock Lane" Artist in Residence in der Grafschaft Cavan in Irland initiiert. Einzelne Elemente des Projekts wurden auf internationalen Kunstfestivals in Deutschland (NordART 2021, Zukunftsvisionen 2020), in den USA (Solas Nua in Washington DC 2018), in Finnland (Art Li Biennale 2018) und in Polen (InSPIRACJE, Szczecin 2017) präsentiert.

Das Projekt wurde dank des Kreativstipendiums der Stadt Szczecin (2020), des Stipendiums "Junges Polen" des polnischen Ministeriums für Kultur und Nationales Erbe (2018) und des Entwicklungspreises des Landkreises Cavan (2017) realisiert.

Der Film IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER wurde auf zahlreichen Filmfestivals präsentiert, u.a. in: Irland, Italien, Griechenland, Portugal, Polen, Spanien oder Georgien. Er gewann den Preis für die beste Animation auf dem 20. Clones Film Festival und eine besondere Erwähnung auf dem Fano International Film Festival in Italien.

Kasia Zimnoch and Paweł Kleszczewski, founders of the Polish KONIK STUDIO, spent six years in County Cavan on the Irish-Northern Irish border. They observed, listened and interpreted. This is how the IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER project came about - a mix of animations, a video installation, digital graphics, recordings, 2D and 3D works and objects. IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER is a story about places, people and their fates. But also about beliefs, nature and connectedness.

At the heart of the project is the animated film of the same name IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER - an interpretation of Irish legends about the beginning of the River Shannon (the source of the Shannon, the "Shannon Pot", is situated in Cavan) and the myth of the Salmon of Knowledge (bradán feasa in Irish). Together with Mariusz Kleszczewski (composition, editing and animation of the characters), Yann Ciennik and Krzysztof Jaworski (music), Kasia Zimnoch and Paweł Kleszczewski have created a work that has won several international awards - at once nature-bound, gloomy and hopeful.

Amazing places such as crannogs (natural and artificial islands in lakes), megaliths and sacred wells as well as deeper insights into the life and stories of the people who inhabit the green island can be seen in the documentary film OILEÁN (Irish for "island"), which is also part of the project.

The project was initiated in 2017, on account of the County Cavan "Bullock Lane" artist residency in Ireland. Individual elements of the project were presented at international art festivals in Germany (NordART 2021, Zukunftsvisionen 2020), in the USA (Solas Nua in Washington DC 2018), in Finland (Art Li Biennale 2018) and in Poland (InSPIRACJE, Szczecin 2017).

The project was realized thanks to the Creative Scholarship of the City of Szczecin (2020), the "Young Poland" scholarship of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2018) and the Development Award of the Cavan County (2017).

The film IN THE BEGINNING WAS WATER was presented at numerous film festivals, including in: Ireland, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Poland, Spain or Georgia. It won the award for best animation at the 20th Clones Film Festival and a special mention at the Fano International Film Festival in Italy.

KONIK STUDIO

Kasia Zimnoch und Paweł Kleszczewski sind ein preisgekröntes Duo von Filmemacher*innen und bildenden Künstler*innen. Beide haben ihr Studium an der Nikolaus-Kopernikus-Universität in Torun, Polen, abgeschlossen.

Ihre Arbeiten wurden auf über hundert internationalen Filmfestivals und Kunstausstellungen präsentiert und mit Preisen und Auszeichnungen bedacht. Im Jahr 2023 (Kasia) und 2022 (Paweł) erhielten sie das Stipendium des Ministeriums für Kultur und Nationales Erbe für die Produktion einer Reihe von Animationsfilmen "Ajtia", die von der polnischen Folklore inspiriert sind.

Im Jahr 2020 wurden sie Stipendiat*innen und erhielten das Kunststipendium der Stadt Szczecin und das Stipendium des Ministeriums für Kultur und Nationales Erbe "Culture online". 2018 erhielten sie das staatliche Stipendium "Junges Polen" des Ministeriums für Kultur und Nationales Erbe. Im Jahr 2017 erhielten sie den Cavan County Council Arts Award "Bullock Lane" in Irland. 2017 erhielten sie das Stipendium "Polish Culture Around the World" des Adam Mickiewicz Instituts.

Sie waren Artists in Residence in Schweden - Guest Artist Residency Jönköping, in Estland - Centre For Creative Industries in Tartu im Rahmen des europäischen Leonardo Da Vinci Programms, zweimal in Irland - Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Annaghmakerrig und in Deutschland - Schafhof Europäisches Künstlerhaus Oberbayern. Im Jahr 2021 waren sie außerdem unter den Finalisten des internationalen Köster Award Wettbewerbs für das beste Musikvideo für zeitgenössische klassische Musik.
Im Jahr 2013 gründeten sie das Konik Studio in Cavan, Irland. Sie leben und arbeiten in Szczecin, Polen.

Kasia Zimnoch and Paweł Kleszczewski are award winning duo of filmmakers and visual artists. Both graduated MA on Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland.

Their works have been presented at over a hundred international film festivals and art exhibitions, winning awards and distinctions. In 2023 (Kasia) and 2022 (Paweł) they received the Scholarship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for the production of a series of animated films „Ajtia” inspired by Polish folklore.

In 2020 they became scholarship holders and received the City of Szczecin Arts bursary and the Scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage „Culture online”. In 2018 they received government scholarship “Young Poland” from Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. In 2017 they received Cavan County Council Arts Award “Bullock Lane” in Ireland. In 2017 they received “Polish Culture Around the World” grant funded by Adam Mickiewicz Institute. They were artists in residency in Sweden- Guest Artist Residency Jönköping, in Estonia- Centre For Creative Industries in Tartu under the European Leonardo Da Vinci program, twice in Ireland- Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig and in Germany- Schafhof Europäisches Künstlerhaus Oberbayern. In 2021, they were also among the finalists of the international Köster Award competition for the best music video for contemporary classic music. In 2013 they established Konik Studio in Cavan Ireland. They live and work in Szczecin, Poland.
