Lourdes

Die an multipler Sklerose erkrankte Christine ist gelähmt und sitzt im Rollstuhl. Da die Ärzt*innen ihr keine Hoffnung auf Heilung mehr machen können, entscheidet sie sich für eine Reise zum katholischen Wallfahrtsort Lourdes in Frankreich. Auch wenn sie nicht an Wunder glaubt, hofft sie doch auf eine Linderung ihrer Gebrechen durch die Hilfe Gottes und darauf, aus ihrer unfreiwilligen Isolation ausbrechen zu können. Auf ihrer Reise wird sie von der jungen und lebenslustigen Malteserin Maria in die Heilbäder und zu den Prozessionen begleitet. Maria aber sucht auch Ablenkung von der Krankenpflege und versucht sich zu amüsieren, was Christines Sehnsucht nach ihrem alten Leben noch verstärkt.
In Lourdes macht Christine außerdem mit der Pilgerin Frau Hartl Bekanntschaft, die für die Heilung Christines betet und deren Gebet auch erhört wird: Christines Zustand verbessert sich zusehends, schließlich kann sie sogar wieder gehen. Das Wunder wird nun vor dem Ärzt*innenkomitee in Lourdes geprüft – die Ergebnisse dieser Prüfung sind fraglich, da bei Christines Krankheit sowohl schubhafte Verschlechterungen als Besserungen möglich sind. Die Möglichkeit eines Rückfalls schwebt fortan drohend über ihr.

Christine, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, is paralysed and sits in a wheelchair. Since the doctors cannot give her any hope of healing, she decides to travel to the Catholic pilgrimage site of Lourdes in France. Even though she does not believe in miracles, she hopes that her afflictions will be alleviated by God's help and that she will be able to break out of her involuntary isolation. On her journey, she is accompanied to the spas and to the processions by the young and fun-loving Maltese nun Maria. Maria, however, also seeks distraction from nursing and tries to have fun, which intensifies Christine's longing for her old life.
In Lourdes, Christine also makes the acquaintance of the pilgrim Mrs Hartl, who prays for Christine's healing and whose prayer is answered: Christine's condition improves visibly, and finally she can even walk again. The miracle is now being examined by the medical committee in Lourdes – the results of this examination are questionable, as both sudden deteriorations and improvements are possible with Christine's illness.
