HORSE MONEY

Ventura, bereits der Held aus Costas COLOSSAL YOUTH, wird in einer Nervenheilanstalt behandelt. In einer atemberaubenden Mischung aus Realem und Halluziniertem, Begreifbarem und Unbegreifbarem, Fiktionalem und Dokumentarischem wird die Vergangenheit Venturas mit einer einzigartigen Bildsprache beleuchtet. Ein komplexer Kinotrip, der Ventura als Gefangener des eigenen Geistes und der portugiesischen Geschichte zeigt. HORSE MONEY, Costas vierter Film, bei dem das ehemalige Armenviertel Fontainhas, und seine Bewohner im Zentrum stehen, erhielt 2014 den Regiepreis in Locarno und gewann den internationalen Hauptpreis des Filmfest Münchens.

HORSE MONEY ist Teil des Begleitprogramms zur Ausstellung CINEMASHER von Judith Meister und Dean Wallflower. Er steht auf den ersten Blick im völligen Kontrast zur Installation – lange stille Szenen, das Fokussieren auf Details im Gegensatz zur chaotischen „Kurzlebigkeit“ der Film-Schnipseln in der Installation. Aber eigentlich sind sich die beiden Kunstwerke doch ziemlich ähnlich – beide brechen mit linearen, chronologietreuen Narrativen und laden die Zuschauer*innen dazu ein, eine eigene Erzählung und Sinnkarte zu konstruieren.

Ventura, already the protagonist of Costa's COLOSSAL YOUTH, is being treated in a mental hospital. Ventura's past is illuminated in a breathtaking mixture of the real and the hallucinated, the comprehensible and the incomprehensible, the fictional and the documentary, and with a unique visual language. A complex cinematic journey that shows Ventura as a prisoner of his own mind and of Portuguese history. HORSE MONEY, Costa's fourth film, which focuses on the former slum of Fontainhas and its inhabitants, received the Directing Award in Locarno in 2014 and won the main international prize at the Munich Film Festival. HORSE MONEY is part of the exhibition program CINEMASHER by Judith Meister and Dean Wallflower. At first view, it stands in complete contrast to the installation - long silent scenes, the focus on details in contrast to the chaotic "ephemerality" of the film snippets in the installation. But the two artworks are actually quite similar - both break with linear, chronological narratives and invite viewers to construct their own narrative and map of meaning.
