PONGO CALLING

2018 behauptet der Tschechische Präsident Miloš Zeman in einem öffentlichen Statement, Rom*nja seien faul und würden sich weigern zu arbeiten. Einige Jahre zuvor verlässt Štefan Pongo, ein Rom, mit seiner Familie Tschechien und wandert nach Großbritannien aus. Ein Grund dafür ist unter anderem rassistische Diskriminierung. Pongo arbeitet in Großbritannien als Lastwagenfahrer und vertreibt sich seine Zeit mit sozialen Medien.
Zemans Statement macht Pongo zum politischen Aktivisten. Er streamt eine Gegenrede und bittet andere Rom*nja ihm Fotos von sich bei der Arbeit zu schicken. Pongo erhält Tausende davon. Er produziert ein Vlog, kämpft online gegen die „Hasser“, organisiert Anti-Rassismus-Demonstrationen und gründet eine Bürgervereinigung. All das geht oft auf Kosten der Zeit, die er mit seiner Familie verbringt. Ist es das trotzdem wert?

In 2018, Czech President Miloš Zeman claims in a public statement that Roma are lazy and refuse to work. A few years earlier, Štefan Pongo, a Roma, leaves the Czech Republic with his family and emigrates to the UK. One of the reasons for this was racial discrimination. Pongo works in the UK as a lorry driver and spends a lot of time on social media. Zeman's statement turns Pongo into a political activist. When he hears Zeman's statement, he streams a counter-speech and asks other Roma to send him photos of themselves at work. Pongo receives thousands of photos. He produces a vlog, fights online against the "haters", organizes anti-racism demonstrations and founds a citizens' association. All of this often comes at the expense of time spent with his family. Is it still worth it?
