We Were Smart

Mit ihren aufwendigen, knallbunten Frisuren und extravaganten Klamotten zogen Mitte der 2000er Jugendliche vom Land die Blicke auf sich: die shāmǎtè杀马特, auf Englisch SMART. In den Fabriken der Städte gingen sie oft schlecht bezahlter, monotoner Arbeit nach und trugen so erheblich zum wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung Chinas bei. Ihr auffälliges Äußeres jedoch stieß in der Öffentlichkeit auf Ablehnung und mündete in Diskriminierung und Hass. Li Yifan lässt ehemalige Mitglieder der Bewegung ihre Geschichte erzählen. Sein Film thematisiert ungeschönt die sozioökonomischen Probleme, die zum Entstehen und letztlichen Verschwinden der Subkultur führten.

With their elaborate, brightly colored hairstyles and extravagant clothes, young people from the countryside attracted attention in the mid-2000s. They were known as shāmǎtè杀马特, or SMART. Trying to make a living, they often engaged in low-paid, monotonous work, contributing significantly to China's economic boom. Their flamboyant appearance, however, met with public disapproval and resulted in discrimination and hatred.
Li Yifan lets former members of the movement tell their story. His film takes an unembellished look at the socio-economic problems that led to the emergence and eventual disappearance of the subculture. (Chinese with English subtitles).
