THE LAST KLEZMER – LEOPOLD KOZLOWSKI: HIS LIFE AND MUSIC

Aus der Perspektive des Klezmer-Musikers, Fotografen und Filmemachers Yale Strom porträtiert „THE LAST KLEZMER“ das bewegte Leben und die Musik von Leopold Kozlowski, dem letzten Klezmer-Musiker, der in Polen mit dieser musikalischen Tradition aufgewachsen ist. Noch vor wenigen Generationen zählte diese Region unter ihren dreieinhalb Millionen Juden Tausende von „Klezmorim“. In den 90er-Jahren gab es dann nur noch einen. Leopold lässt sein Leben anhand von Erinnerungen, Musik und einer Reise zurück in seine Heimatstadt Przemyslany (in der Nähe von Lwiw, Ukraine) Revue passieren. Wir erleben den Musiker als Dirigenten und Lehrer, der sein Wissen über jüdische Musik an eine neue Generation katholischer Polen weitergibt.

Zu Gast mit einer Einführung - Autorin, Übersetzerin und Dozentin Paulina Schulz, Übersetzerin des Buches "Der letzte Klezmer – Das Leben des Leopold Kozlowski-Kleinman" von Jacek Cygan.

Through the eyes of klezmer musician, photographer, and filmmaker Yale Strom, “THE LAST KLEZMER” portrays the turbulent life and music of Leopold Kozlowski, the last klezmer musician to have grown up in Poland within this musical tradition. Just a few generations ago, this region was home to thousands of “klezmorim” among its three and a half million Jews. By the 1990s, there was only one left. Leopold reflects on his life through memories, music, and a journey back to his hometown of Preremyschlany (near Lviv, Ukraine). We see the musician as a conductor and teacher, passing on his knowledge of Jewish music to a new generation of Catholic Poles. (English, Polish, Ukrainian with English subtitles)

Our guest speaker, who will provide an introduction, is author, translator, and lecturer Paulina Schulz, translator of the book "The Last Klezmer: The Life of Leopold Kozlowski-Kleinman" by Jacek Cygan.
