Der bescheidene und anspruchslose Bauer Ma und die schüchterne Guiying werden von ihren Familien isoliert: Ma ist das letzte unverheiratete Familienmitglied und Guiying ist unfruchtbar und hat eine Behinderung. Gegen ihren Willen werden die zwei Fremden zwangsverheiratet und müssen sich trotz ihrer ohnehin problembeladenen Situation gemeinsam ein Haus bauen. Aus der anfänglichen Distanz erwächst schon bald eine unerwartete, auf ihre ganz besondere Weise liebevolle Bindung.
Li Ruijuns Film erzählt behutsam und überaus zärtlich eine Geschichte über Entwurzelung, Ausbeutung und Liebe entgegen aller Widerstände.

The humble and unassuming farmer Ma and the timid Guiying are isolated from their families: Ma is the last unmarried family member and Guiying is infertile and has a disability. Against their will, the two strangers are forced into marriage. Despite their already troubled situation, they have to build a house for themselves. The initial distance between the two of them soon fades and an unexpected bond begins to blossom.
