Der Weg nach Mekka – Die Reise des Muhammad Asad

Der Jude Leopold Weiss bricht Anfang der 1920er Jahre zu einer Reise in den Nahen Osten auf. Die Wüste zieht ihn in ihren Bann, der Islam wird seine geistige Heimat. Das Judentum lässt er hinter sich, konvertiert zum Islam und nennt sich nun Muhammad Asad. Er wird zu einem der bedeutendsten Muslime des 20. Jahrhunderts: Er ist Berater am Königshof Saudi-Arabiens, übersetzt den Koran, wird Mitbegründer Pakistans und schließlich UN-Botschafter. In seinem Leben voller Kontroversen versuchte Muhammad Asad, Vater des Kulturanthropologen Talal Asad, Brücken über die Kluft zwischen islamischer Welt und dem 'Westen' zu schlagen. Von den Wüsten Arabiens bis zum Ground Zero folgt der Regisseur Georg Misch den schon verwehten Spuren, findet einen, der nicht nach Abenteuern suchte, sondern vermitteln wollte zwischen Orient und Okzident. Auf den Stationen der Reise werden die Überlegungen Asads heutigen Problemen zwischen den Kulturen gegenübergestellt. Das Filmteam tritt in seine Fußstapfen und trifft auf dem rekonstruierten Lebenspfad Menschen aus seinem nahen Umfeld: Familie und Freund*innen, Expert*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen, Verehrer*innen seines Werks sowie zahlreiche Zufallsbekanntschaften, die von dem in Vergessenheit geratenen Reformer viel, noch nichts oder nur wenig wissen.

The Jew Leopold Weiss sets off on a journey to the Middle East in the early 1920s. The desert casts its spell over him, Islam becomes his spiritual home. He leaves Judaism behind him, converts to Islam and now calls himself Muhammad Asad. He becomes one of the most important Muslims of the 20th century: He is an advisor at the royal court of Saudi Arabia, translates the Quran, becomes co-founder of Pakistan and finally UN ambassador. In his life full of controversy, Muhammad Asad, father of the cultural anthropologist Talal Asad, tried to build bridges across the gap between the Islamicate world and the 'West'. From the deserts of Arabia to Ground Zero, director Georg Misch follows the already blown away traces, finds someone who was not looking for adventure, but for mediation between Orient and Occident. At the various stops on the journey, Asad’s reflections are contrasted with contemporary problems between the two cultures. The film team follows in his footsteps and meets people from his close environment on the reconstructed path of life: family and friends, experts and scholars, admirers of his work as well as numerous chance acquaintances who know much, nothing or only little about the forgotten reformer.
