Nachdem der Chirurg Dr. František Svoboda ein tödliches Attentat auf den SS-Offizier Reinhard Heydrich verübt hat, wollen die Nazis Vergeltung. Mithilfe des Brauereibesitzers Emil Czaka erstellen sie eine Liste von 400 Prager Bürger*innen als Geiseln, die exekutiert werden sollen, wenn der Attentäter nicht ausgeliefert wird. Dem tschechoslowakischen Widerstand gelingt es aber, dass Czaka selbst des Mordes an Heydrich verdächtigt wird.

Ein spannungsvoller Anti-Nazi-Film mit exzellenter Besetzung, karikaturhafter Typisierung der Charaktere im Stil amerikanischer Propagandafilme und unterhaltsamen Hollywood-Elementen. Der Film von Fritz Lang nach dem Drehbuch von Bertolt Brecht und mit Musik von Hanns Eisler war 1940 in den Kategorien „Beste Musik“ und „Bester Ton“ für einen Oscar nominiert.

Mit einer Einführung von Bettina Weil, Musikhistorikerin sowie Vorständin der Internationalen Hanns Eisler Gesellschaft, Berlin. Im Anschluss an den Film gibt es außerdem einen Vortrag zu Hanns Eisler im spanischen Bürger*innenkrieg von Musikwissenschaftler Dr. Diego Alonso Tomás.
 

After the surgeon Dr. František Svoboda made a fatal assassination attempt on the SS officer Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazis want revenge. With the help of brewery owner Emil Czaka, they draw up a list of 400 Prague citizens as hostages who are to be executed if the assassin is not extradited. However, the Czechoslovak resistance succeeds in getting Czaka himself suspected of Heydrich's murder.

A suspenseful anti-Nazi film with an excellent cast, caricatured typing of the characters in the style of American propaganda films and entertaining elements of Hollywood films. The film by Fritz Lang based on the screenplay by Bertolt Brecht and with music by Hanns Eisler was nominated for an Oscar in 1940 in the categories "Best Music" and "Best Sound". With an introduction by Bettina Weil, music historian and board member of the International Hanns Eisler Society, Berlin. After the film there will be a lecture on Hanns Eisler in the Spanish civil war by musicologist Dr. Diego Alonso Tomás.
