DER 32. AUGUST AUF ERDEN

Die 26-jährige Simone schläft am Steuer ihres Wagens ein und überlebt wie durch ein Wunder einen schweren Unfall. Entschlossen, ihr Leben zu ändern, gibt sie ihren Job als Model auf und will ein Kind. Simones bester Freund, der Dauerstudent Philippe, soll sie schwängern. Er willigt ein, allerdings unter der Bedingung, dass sie dazu in die Wüste reisen. So landen Simon und Philippe in Salt Lake City, doch damit ist ihre Reise noch lange nicht zu Ende.

Denis Villeneuves Spielfilmdebüt ist zugleich existentialistische Komödie und surreales Road Movie. Dieser frühe Film zeichnet sich bereits durch außergewöhnliche, beeindruckende Schauplätze und Sets aus und bietet damit einen Vorgeschmack auf die bildgewaltigen Werke, für die Villeneuve mittlerweile bekannt ist. Wiederkehrende Elemente wie Mehrsprachigkeit und die besondere Bedeutung der Wüste (DUNE!) reihen den Film im Gesamtwerk ein und verleihen ihm deutlich mehr Tiefe als typischen 90er-Jahre Beziehungsfilmen.

26-year-old Simone falls asleep at the wheel of her car and miraculously survives a serious accident. Determined to change her life, she quits her job as a model and wants a child. Simone's best friend, the long-term student Philippe, is supposed to get her pregnant. He agrees, but on the condition that they travel to the desert. So Simone and Philippe end up in Salt Lake City, but their journey is far from over.
Denis Villeneuve's feature film debut is both an existentialist comedy and a surreal road movie. This early film is already characterized by extraordinary, impressive locations and sets and offers a foretaste of the visually stunning works for which Villeneuve is now known. Recurring elements such as multilingualism and the special meaning of the desert (DUNE!) place the film in the overall work and give it more depth than typical 90s relationship films.
